Ron Miller of Regular Folks United Responds to President Obama's Speech on the National Debt
Annapolis (April 14) - Ron Miller, president of Regular Folks United, issued the following statement concerning President Obama's debt-reduction plan, presented yesterday at George Washington University:
"President Obama's speech on reducing the national debt was an act of petulance unbecoming of the office of president of the United States. Instead of adopting the sober and serious tone this debate requires, he chose this opportunity to instead vilify Rep. Paul Ryan (R-WI) and his mature and methodical plan to begin chipping away at the mountain of debt our nation has accumulated over generations, and at an historic and accelerated rate in recent years. It's clear the White House has long been obsessed with and threatened by Rep. Ryan's intellect and statesmanship, but that doesn't justify the demagoguery of yesterday's comments.
"The president dusted off the musty old scrolls of class warfare, intent on casting a spell of envy, resentment and division over the nation he once swore to bring together. Instead, his overwrought appeal to emotions, citing the actions of a few bad actors in our system of free enterprise to indict the whole lot of entrepreneurs, innovators, and producers, is designed to stir the animus of those who have been led to believe they cannot survive without the benevolence of a distant bureaucracy in Washington, DC. That bureaucracy has proven itself to be quite adept at keeping people where they are, but woefully inadequate to the challenge of raising them up to another level.
"President Obama fails to understand that Americans do not despise success gained through hard work and virtue, which is how the overwhelming majority of men and women have earned their wealth. Most millionaires did not begin that way, and they stand as icons of the American dream, in which upward mobility is determined not by pedigree or fate, but by one's 'sweat equity,' skills and experience, and willingness to take on risk, endure a few spills, and get right back up again.
"If anyone is proposing 'a fundamentally different America than the one we've known throughout most of our history,' it is the president. America's history is not one of entitlement, victimhood, and covetousness of others' success to the point of using the government, the Biblical "agents of wrath," to punish the achievers and redistribute their earnings to others.
"President Obama plucks at the heartstrings when declaring the government to be the friend of the 'children with autism or Down's syndrome,' but fails to acknowledge that it is the wealth producers, not the government or its dependents, that have grown the economy enough to fund the innovations and technology that help children with serious illnesses.
"In fact, government is useless without the 'makers' of society being encouraged and incentivized to create more wealth. Contrary to the lies of the Left, wealth in a capitalistic society is not a fixed entity to be fought over, but a dynamic and renewable resource that has lifted billions of people worldwide out of poverty and created a viable middle class. Wealth grows and is available to everyone - as long as it's cultivated.
"The president's proposal to raise taxes does practically nothing to sop up the sea of red ink, and incentivizes wealth builders to shelter capital rather than release it into the marketplace where it can grow. Even if we adopted the absurd notion of confiscating every single penny earned by every American making over $100,000 a year, we would still not have enough to cover one year of government debt.
"The time for painless solutions is long past us, and we need to treat the American people like adults and prepare them for the difficult decisions that lie ahead. Pitting them against one another in a fight for wealth that is diminishing not because of hoarding or malfeasance, but governmental theft and meddling in the natural workings of free enterprise, is irresponsible and unpresidential."
